Help to Recognize & Report Phone Fraud
Unfortunately in today's world fraud comes in many forms,
not least of which is telephone fraud.
Recognise Phone Fraud:
Whenever you receive a sales call, caution should be taken,
and you should ask yourself these questions. If the answers
give you any doubt about the caller's intentions or methods,
end the call.
Who is calling - and why:
Telemarketers must tell you up front that this is a sales
call, who they are (the name of the seller) and what it is
they are selling before they start any sales pitch. If they
do not, say "thank you, but no" and hang up.
Are they in a hurry:
If they are trying to hurry you to make a decision, using
high pressure tactics, they are usually hiding something.
Legitimate businesses should allow you time and provide you
with written information about their offer, before asking
you to commit to a purchase.
Free SHOULD be FREE:
If you are being asked to make any kind of payment, ie
postage and packaging, for a supposedly "free" item, DON'T!
Free should be free. It does not matter if it is a prize,
a gift, whatever. If you have to pay anything, it is a
purchase.
Why am I "confirming" my billing details?:
Be very wary of giving out your account information, or of
confirming it, even if the caller already seems to have the
details. Some callers will have already obtained your
account details prior to calling. Some may not, and are
trying to trick you into giving them your details. By
getting you to give or confirm the details, they could be
going to claim you approved a charge.
The time the call is made:
By law, telemarketers are allowed to call between the hours
of 8am and 9pm. Anyone calling outside this time zone is
flouting the law.
Do you want their calls?
If not, tell them not to call you again. If they do call
again, they are breaking the law.
Report Phone Fraud:
Recognising fraudulent calls is very important, and
reporting them to the appropriate law enforcement authority
is even more so. By reporting them, you are helping to
stop telephone scammers.
Report telephone scammers/fraudulent calls to the FTC and
your state Attorney General so they can prosecute fraudulent
telemarketers who try to steal your money. Take a note of
the name and telephone number of the caller, and the date
and time of the call.
This also applies even if your number is on the National Do
Not Call Registry. You should only be receiving calls from
those companies with which you do business, or you have
given permission to call. Report any call you receive from
a company you do not have a relationship with, or whom you
have asked not to call you.
Register Your Number:
Placing your phone number on the National Do Not Call
Registry only takes a couple of minutes, and should cut
down the number of telemarketing calls you receive. Once
your number is registered, feel free to hang up on any
unrequested calls, or better still, report them.
Your complaint is entered into the Consumer Sentinel
Network, a database that is used by law enforcement
agencies across the country and around the world. It can
help them track down scam artists, detect patterns in their
calls, find other victims, and ultimately, stop the fraud.
You can register your phone number at DoNotCall.gov, or by
calling 1-888-382-1222 (TTY: 1-866-290-4236) from the
number you wish to register. If you register online, you
must click on the confirmation email you receive to
complete your free registration.
Your registration will not expire. Your number is on the
list until you take it off, or your number is disconnected
and re-assigned to someone else.
Placing your number on the Registry stops most
telemarketing calls, but not all. Once your number has been
on the Registry for 31 days, you still may get calls from,
or on behalf of:
* Political organizations, charities, and pollsters
* Companies with whom you have an existing business
relationship
* Companies you’ve given permission to call
Companies that you do business with may call for 18 months.
If you ask a company for information, it may call for three
months.
The Registry accepts personal cell phone and home phone
numbers. Federal Communications Commission regulations
prohibit the use of automated dialers to call cell phone
numbers, so most telemarketers won’t cold-call consumers on
their cell phones – despite urban myths and emails to the
contrary.
Telemarketing fraud is a crime.
Professional criminals posing as legitimate telemarketers
are trying to worm their way into your wallet. They are
very good at what they do: their “pitch” is perfect, their
tone is friendly and sincere, and their answers to your
questions seem to make sense. It’s no wonder that consumers,
regardless of their age, education or experience, can fall
for telemarketing frauds.
By learning how to recognize and report telephone fraud,
not only can you help protect yourself, you can help stop
some scams – and if you put your phone numbers on the
National Do Not Call Registry, you can reduce the number of
unwanted telemarketing calls you get.

fraud, and how to place your phone number on the National
Do Not Call Registry, go to http://www.ftc.gov/phonefraud.
The FTC works for the consumer to prevent fraudulent,
deceptive, and unfair business practices in the marketplace
and to provide information to help consumers spot, stop,
and avoid them.
To file a complaint or to get free information on consumer
issues, visit http://www.ftc.gov or call toll-free,
1-877-FTC-HELP (1-877-382-4357); TTY: 1-866-653-4261.
The FTC enters consumer complaints into the Consumer
Sentinel Network, a secure online database and investigative
tool used by hundreds of civil and criminal law enforcement
agencies in the U.S. and abroad.
